Equicoaching: a surprisingly powerful technique for leadership and self-insight
What if your leadership is literally mirrored—without words, without judgment, but razor sharp? That is exactly what happens in equicoaching: a unique technique in which horses are used as a mirror for human behavior. No role-playing, no theory, but a direct experience that hits home and sticks.
What is equicoaching?
Equicoaching is a form of coaching that uses the interaction between humans and horses to make behavior visible and tangible. The horse acts as a neutral feedback provider, responding to your body language, energy, and intention.
You step into the arena, so to speak, with your behavior.
The horse observes, feels, and reacts—without masks or social conventions. As a participant, you are given a mirror for your communication, your leadership style, your tensions, or your lack of clarity.
How does that really work?
During a session, you stand next to the horse. You are given a simple task: to guide the animal, lead it, make contact with it, etc., without using physical force or your voice. Everything revolves around non-verbal behavior: your posture, your energy, your focus.
The horse will follow you if you are clear, calm, and congruent.
It will retreat or become confused if you are unclear, too forceful, or internally divided.
This immediate feedback is professionally interpreted during the session by a certified equicoach. This creates a powerful learning cycle: you experience – reflect – adjust – and experience again.
Why is equicoaching so impactful?
Because it affects you physically and emotionally. You literally feel what works and what doesn't. Your behavior becomes visible in the moment, without anyone having to tell you anything.
Equicoaching makes the unconscious conscious. It helps leaders to:
- slow down and be truly present
- communicate congruently (what you say = what you convey)
- develop self-confidence and clarity in their attitude
- recognize tensions or control mechanisms
Why does equicoaching fit into leadership training?
Leadership is about influence, connection, and awareness.
And it is precisely these elements that are sharply addressed in equicoaching. The horse shows you how you come across—not what you think you are doing.
That is why Stanwick integrates this technique into the Behavior as a Mirror training program. In combination with Leary's Rose (a powerful behavioral model), you not only receive feedback on your behavior, but also a framework for working with it.
You get to know yourself better, by doing and feeling.
And that is what makes this training so special.
Behavior as a Mirror is not a traditional training course. It is an experience that stays with you.
For leaders who want to grow in who they are and how they connect.
