Start to lead

Start to lead

Taking on a leadership role for the first time is a significant step. Suddenly, your role changes. You are no longer solely responsible for your own work, but also for supporting, guiding and leading others.
This raises a whole host of questions. How do you find your feet as a leader? How do you adapt your approach to different people and situations? How do you give feedback? What do you do when a conversation becomes difficult? And how do you ensure that your team takes responsibility without you having to sort everything out yourself?

This is an in-company course
  • Dates to be scheduled
  • Tailor-made training program
  • One or more employees
  • Own cases with concrete tools and strategies

Target group

This course is aimed at first-time leaders: people who have recently taken on a managerial role or are preparing for their first leadership role.

For example:

  • new managers and team leaders
  • co-ordinators with responsibility for others
  • project leaders who need to inspire and guide people without always having hierarchical responsibility
  • professionals taking their first steps towards people management

No prior leadership training is required.

Our approach

  • This course is deliberately practical and interactive.
  • We combine brief theoretical insights with exercises, reflection, case studies and discussion. For us, models are not an end in themselves. Above all, they help you to better understand situations and provide you with a framework to fall back on when, as a new leader, you’re not quite sure what to do.
  • You’ll have the chance to get a taste of different leadership models, experiment with them and discover which approach works in which situation.
  • So you don’t have to be the perfect leader after just two days. However, we do want you to go home with greater insight, a firmer foundation and more confidence to further shape your leadership role.

About the training

You can’t learn good leadership in two days. But you can lay a solid foundation in two days.

During this course, you’ll be introduced to a selection of basic models relating to leadership, communication, coaching and collaboration. We’ll use them as frameworks to examine your own practice.

You’ll discover what suits you best, try out different approaches and learn to make more conscious choices about how you respond as a leader.

The course is broadly based and not tied to a specific sector or working environment. Situations may differ, but the fundamental questions faced by new leaders are often surprisingly familiar.

What to expect?

In this two-day course, you’ll be provided with a number of essential insights and practical models to help you feel more confident in your new role.
No theory overload, but recognisable situations, simple frameworks and plenty of opportunity to practise and exchange ideas.

You’ll gain greater insight into:

  • what changes when you take the step into leadership
  • your own preferred leadership style and its impact on others
  • how to adapt your leadership style to the individual and the situation
  • how to give clear and constructive feedback
  • how to handle difficult or tense conversations
  • how to encourage ownership in others through coaching
  • what teams need to work well together
  • how to remain mindful in your leadership role, even under pressure

We’ll draw as much as possible on recognisable situations and case studies provided by the participants. So you’ll learn not only from the trainer, but also from one another.

Programme

Day 1 – Finding your place as a leader

From expert or colleague to leader

We start with the basics: what does it actually mean to lead?

You’ll explore your new role, your own preferences and the different ways in which you can guide people.

  • Among other things, we’ll cover:
  • the role and responsibilities of a leader
  • the shift from doing things yourself to helping others grow
  • leadership styles
  • situational leadership: not everyone needs the same thing from you
  • your own strengths and pitfalls as a leader
  • coping with pressure and resilience in your leadership role

Key question: Who do I want to be – and who do I need to be – as a leader?

Day 2 – Engaging people and helping them grow

From good intentions to leadership in practice

On day two, we shift our focus to interacting with others. After all, leadership is most evident in the conversations you have and in how you interact with your team.

Among other things, we’ll be working on:

  • communicating clearly and setting out expectations
  • giving and receiving feedback
  • not shying away from difficult conversations
  • coaching: asking questions rather than taking over and providing solutions
  • dealing with resistance
  • encouraging ownership and responsibility
  • the foundations of strong teams and collaboration

We conclude by applying what you’ve learnt to your own practice: what will you do differently when you return to work?

Key question: How do I help others to take responsibility, grow and achieve results together?
